As I did my Saturday errands today, I was struck by how nice our villages are because of the people and businesses who put out and take care of plantings, both floral and other. These pictures are just from walking up and down one block of Lincoln Street in Newton Highlands – I didn’t even make it to the beautiful garden alongside the playground or the lovely plantings around the fountain at the bend of Walnut. Today I felt especially appreciative of the flowers beautifying the fence at the T station. So thank you to all the people who add these bright spots of beauty to our lives.
Kudos, Meredith!
You’re one of those keen ‘observers’ of the raw resplendent beauty about us. I know exactly how you feel about Newton Highlands as I resided on Lincoln Street once upon a time. Peace-giving and quiet and beauteous nearly 30 years ago, even as several empty 19th century homes shocking with battleship grey paint and overgrowth of vines with huge trees smothering property, I always saw potential. Those same homes shine brightly with various colors of paint, big bushes, small shade trees, plants aplenty, manicured lawns and ship-shape driveways!
Still I hop the Green Line during the ‘special season’ to trek a few T stops to stroll through my ‘old’ neighborhood. Then I meander along to Crystal Lake, my favorite oasis in the Highlands. As I pass slowly along Lake Ave., I see new additions to old homes, new homes, freshly painted and renovated older homes that during my time living there wore a haggard appearance. I think of a few elder neighbor friends no longer with us. Despite the many years and time and season, beauty continues her sweep at every turn in Newton Highlands.
Thank you for noticing enough to write your thoughts in this public square!
