Today’s Boston Globe featured a lengthy article about on ongoing dispute between some instructors and the owner of Down Under Yoga in Newtonville.
Initially the dispute revolved around a non-compete clause that many of the teachers believed to be overreaching and restrictive. Eventually the owner agreed, apologized and dropped the clause. That apparently wasn’t enough for some of the aggrieved teacher who continued with a public campaign against the owner complaining of bullying behavior.
Meanwhile more than 35 teachers, including some who have worked with Cohen for a decade, sent a letter to the Globe stating that “#BostonYogaUnites is waging a “cancel campaign …. we stand by Down Under, a successful female-owned business that has proudly made it through the pandemic and changed this industry for the better,” the letter reads.
For all I know Justine may be the kindest, most generous of people. But she is ultimately accountable for having set an abusive hiring policy. Any misfortune that arose from that choice is her own doing.
May it give other employers pause in trying to set abusive hiring policies, and may employees be emboldened to stand up and say no.
The globe did a terrible job reporting on this story. They brought a he said she said dispute that was already resolved by removing a non-compete clause to the front page. This is nothing but Newton gossip that the rest of us don’t care about.
