| Newton MA News and Politics BlogUnbeknownst to most Newtonians, our fair city is home to a stone artifact that was carefully crafted by the ancients to align with the sun as our planet whirls around the sun.

OK, it’s really not ancient … and OK it was created with no knowledge of astronomy or equinoxes …. which it makes it even way more and totally amazing that at the precise moment of the autumnal equinox, and the summer solstice, a beam of sun light is emitted from the narrow slit between the two vertical stone slabs.  Read more details here.

Yesterday at 3:20 PM was the 2021 autumnal equinox.  Alas, it was cloudy and overcast and the Newtonhenge was not able to do its henge thing.  The rhythms of the cosmos are eternal so we’ll just have to wait until next year to behold the grandeur and mystery of the Newtonhenge.

In the meantime, I’ve embarked on a one man mission to begin publicizing this unique civic treasure and get it into Atlas Obscura and various other tour guides.  I won’t rest until every September and June Village14 is full of people complaining about the traffic and all the tour buses tying up Centre St on their way to Weeks Field.  To that end, I’ve printed the T shirts – “Newtonhenge” and a photo on the front, “Best damn suburban mini-henge in America” on the back.  Do your part for Newton civic booster-ism  and order one today ($20).  Email [email protected] with size and your address and I’ll deliver it to your door.
