Vote today in the preliminary election for Newton’s mayor. This is as simple a ballot as you’ll ever see – one race, three candidates. The two winners will appear on the November final election ballot.
- Albert Cecchinelli Jr
- Ruthanne Fuller
- Amy Mah Sangiolo
Polls are open 7 AM – 8 PM.
Note that that their are two new polling locations.
- * Ward 3, Precinct 1 – Scandanavian Living Center, 206 Waltham St (permanent change)
- * Ward 8 Precinct 2, Oak Hill Middle School, 130 Wheeler Rd (temporary change, just for this vote)
I was the first (and only) voter at HYDE this morning! (Ward 5/Prec 2)
Thanks for voting NewtonMom.
@Jerry – Please check your spelling of the candidates’ names.
Ward 1, Prec 3 (Bigelow). I was 5th voter at about 8am. Saw a Sangiolo sign out front.
Yes, what’s up with the spelling? 2/3 spelled incorrectly…
Oops. Fixed. Thanks
Fortunately, I spelled my black oval correctly. So I think my ballot will count!
Also: Ward 6/Precinct 1 — at least for this election — has moved back from Weeks Center to Bowen Elementary, where it used to be … up until maybe 8 years ago or so?
Is there an explanation? I’m assuming the city wants to keep the public out of all senior centers across the city for obvious reasons.
@Dulles, I am in 6/1 and have voted at Bowen for 14 years. Never voted at Weeks Center. I did see that it was just 6/1 and I seem to recall it include 6/2 at least at some point recently, but this morning it was just 6/1. My guess is that it was 6/2 that may have had some movement
Curious to see how many votes Al gets.
MMQC:
I’d say less than 10% of the total. Close to 5%. Tough to be involved in a 3 way campaign with an incumbent and someone as well established as Amy.
That said, I know of almost no one voting in this preliminary, so who knows? I think everyone thinks Amy and Ruthanne will be the final two standing, so except for eliminating Al, this particular vote doesn’t mean much. And I’m sure enough true believers for both Ruthanne and Amy exist to be more than sufficient to move them past the preliminary.
i was voter 133 at 1230 at 8/2
Hi MaryLee — that’s right, all these years later you’d think that I’d not mix up 6/1 and 6/2. Our neighborhood used to be part of 6/1 (Bowen), then about 8 years ago or so we got shifted to 6/2 (Weeks). Today Weeks was closed and we were directed to Bowen. Maybe they collapsed 6/1 and 6/2 into Bowen for this one election? Turnout isn’t exactly going to be overwhelming.
Whatever happened, Weeks is closed, Bowen is open, it’s a beautiful day and I absolutely did not mind the extra walk.
Voter 193 AE 3/2 (Peirce School). One Amy sign outside.
Voter 300 @ 5:30ish @4/1
I voted by mail. Why not? So actual voters might be higher than the comments suggest.
Hmm. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere on the city’s web site to get tonight’s election results. In elections past there’s been a prominent link to get results as soon as they’re talley’ed.
Does anyone know how to get results from the city this evening?
The unofficial results are supposed to be here after 8. The link Is from the Election page but the font is light

Too bad we don’t have ranked choice voting. Would save a lot of money by holding the preliminary election and final election on same day.

For a preliminary mayoral election with a wealthy incumbent, this is closer than I expected.
Waiting on 8-4

1:1 was super duper light today sadly. Glad to see it just got into the system a sec ago. Our officer was out the door by 8:15 or so with the ballots.
All votes counted –
Albert Cecchinelli Jr 661
Ruthanne Fuller 5926
Amy Mah Sangiolo 4247
Not that close, really. RAF won half of the precincts on the north side (where Amy should have cleaned up), and Amy didn’t carry any precinct on the south side. Amy has a lot of work to do and may need a change in messaging/strategy if she is to win.
Such a disappointment. In my view Ruthanne’s performance as Mayor hasn’t warranted this level of citywide support. She’ll take this as validation of a term that has profoundly disappointed so many. I give great credit to Amy, but the only way I see her overcoming this in the Nov election is to take off the kid gloves. There’s plenty to attack in this Mayor’s record without needing to get nasty. The kid gloves need to come off. Thoughts?
Also, my prediction of close to 5% for Al held true. I’m going to go play the lottery tomorrow.
