I just belatedly heard about this but am loving it. Please help spread the word to any artists you know.
Newton Community Pride is organizing an outdoor art event for this spring-summer. Each artists will be provided a recycled wooden door to do whatever they like with. Deisgns must include both sides of the door and they are encouraged to consider designs that inspire feelings of “connection, reflection, curiosity, and joy.”.
Proposals for the juried competion must be submitted by Sat Feb 28, the 20 selected artists will be notified by March 30, doors are to be completed by May 1. Artists for each accepted design will be paid a stipend of $425. Four of the 20 Doors will be reserved for Newton student artists. Here are more details.
The free-standing doors will be installed in locations all around Newton in May and remain in place from May-November and then be auctioned off.
Big thanks to Newton Community Pride for coming up with a way to help support out local artists, and bring a bit of much needed joy surprise and whimsy to brighten up this dreary year.
Thanks, Jerry, for the shout out!
Newton Community Pride is excited to sponsor this initiative. It will not only encourage the enjoyment of some terrific art in a safe, socially distanced manner, but will also promote the walkability and economic vitality of Newton’s unique village centers (since the doors will be located in and around our villages). We are hopeful that this installation will help get “feet on the street” after a long winter of remote school, work from home, and general social isolation. There is still time to submit a design; go to http://www.newtonoutdoors.org for details. Questions? Send me an email at [email protected].

PS Also want to acknowledge the amazing support for this project that we’ve received from a large number of City departments (including Parks & Rec, Planning, DPW, Law), the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber, and our presenting sponsor, Village Bank!
Is there anything worthwhile in this city that Village Bank doesn’t support?
Vote with your wallet and move your bank account to Village Bank today. This absolutely shameless plug brought to you by a grateful citizen and happy customer.
Thanks Jerry for the post! At Newton Community Pride (NCP) we are very excited to kick off our public art initiatives with http://www.newtonoutdoors.org this spring. I’ve taken a sneak peak at some of the submissions and they are fabulous! These 30×80 repurposed wood doors will become the artists “canvases of creativity” for us to enjoy scattered throughout our village centers from May – October.
As Meryl mentioned Newton OutDoors is in collaboration with Parks, Recreation & Culture Department, Cultural Development Office, DPW, Law & of course with support from Newton Community Pride’s “Presenting Sponsor” Village Bank. Thank you! Thank you!
We hope to have a lot of fun with this project this spring enticing people outside after a dreary winter to enjoy the fresh air, public art and hopefully the increased foot traffic will translate into support for our restaurants and small businesses along the way. A #WinWin for all !
