Apparently, in the back of The Local in W. Newton there was a pizza kitchen. Those of us who have lived here a while know that a few pizza places operated in that stretch of stores (Parrot Pizza comes to mind). Well, now there’s a new shop in town, Frank’s Brick Oven Pizza. He took the cold, dark kitchen and reignited it.
Says the website:
We are located at the back of THE LOCAL KITCHEN & DRINKS, 1391 Washington Street, West Newton, MA. This was actually a pizza shop many years ago. The pizza kitchen was always there but had not been used in in many years..our dream was to do a scratch old school pizza place with high quality ingredients, however we never found the time. Recently with the shutdowns and the fragility of “dine in” restaurants we decided this was our time to turn a negative into a positive.
This means the Washington Street Corridor becomes a very interesting piazza location. We have Max & Leo’s in Newton Corner, The Landing in Nonantum (if you haven’t tried this place stop what you’re doing right now and place an order), and now Frank’s Brick Oven in W. Newton. Honestly, I still like NY PIe on the Waltham line, but that’s because the owner is from NYC and the place fits a spot in my childhood memories of growing up in a New York suburb.
Sweet Tomatoes, hello! :) this looks good too though!
Good catch. There’s plenty of pizza in Newton, but what would qualify as “next level pizza”? I’m thinking of this the way that “third wave coffee” went beyond what we thought of as coffee and into something different (George Howell is a leader here). Is pizza the same thing? I have a few that would make such a list.
Paddy’s has great pizza too, and I heard that the restaurant moving into the former Lumiere space will also have pizza. Oh, and COOK’s flatbread pizzas are great. Now we just need the gyms and exercise studios to safely re-open so we can burn off those calories.
In Newton Corner, we are really happy with Max & Leo’s (Bertucci’s not so much).
We were recently turned on to the Landing and I feel like I have been depriving myself all these years, it’s that good. Do what Chuck says above!
Looking forward to trying Frank’s at some point- that’s good news
My “next level pizza” in Newton is The Landing (holy cow is it good) and Sweet Tomatoes. I like Paddy’s pizza, too. My comfort pizza was Franco’s which to me reminds me most of the pizza I grew up with in the tri state area. I don’t know if they’ll come back. I hope they do.
Curious about Frank’s, as I like brick oven pizza, but I didn’t remember the previous tenants (Parrot and Big Poppy’s) having brick oven pizza. Though it’s been a long time.
While we are talking West Newton, what’s the word on that Blue Salt place that appears to be going into the old Shing Yee?
If you are a Newton resident who has ANY opinion on the opening of this pizza shop, contact me! I’m a student journalist writing about this for the Globe, thanks!

While Frank’s is joining what may seem to be something of a glut of pizza places in West Newton, I look forward to it and I think it’s very timely.
The West Newton Square improvements continue at a brisk pace. The new street lighting is installed and much better than before (and more even and pedestrian-oriented than any of the other village centers). The traffic signals are being turned on. Much of the sidewalk work was done in the fall, leaving the final street paving for last.
With wider sidewalks, plenty of places to sit, and space for outdoor seating, West Newton Square will be really well suited to not-quite-normal outdoor dining, and pizza is one of the easiest foods to serve to outdoor clientele. It seems to have kept most of its businesses (sorry to see you go, L’Aroma! :( ). I hope the construction inconvenience and years of collaborative planning with the city will pay off.
And I hope the same will be true for Newtonville as well!
Max and Leo’s, Sweet Tomatos, Paddies are all next level, excellent choices. Max and Leo’s probably one of the best I’ve ever had. Always room for a new pizza choice. Look forward to Frank’s
Used to be Tee Gee’s Pizza, back when there was also a Brigham’s in West Newton Square.
Got some yummy pizza and super friendly service at Frank’s the night before last. Great crust. What constitutes “the best pizza” is such a personal and subjective thing, but Frank’s is definitely worth consideration for a spot in your take-out rotation.
BrickFire Pizza Co on Chestnut Street in Newton Upper Falls is pretty good, but not as good as Nick’s Pizza
So is it a gas brick oven or does it use wood/coal?
