If you’re one of the few carnivores who isn’t watching salt intake these days, and if you haven’t had some really good deli recently, let me suggest Barry’s Village Deli in Waban Square as the perfect nearby source. Offering contactless curbside pick-up and walk-up, they can provide a lovely change from the pizza and Asian menus that have sustained many through the season of Covid-19. While waiting for our Waban Area Council Zoom Meeting to begin last Thursday evening, the Area Councilors were reminiscing about the crab salad sandwiches prepared there that people drive for miles to purchase. This menu item was a revelation to some on our Zoom call, including me, but apparently its reputation has spread afar. I seldom stray from my favorite kippered salmon platter, a specialty hot-smoked, baked salmon that is always moist and flavorful…unlike its dried-out cousin kippered salmon sold in packages in a few grocery stores. Check out their menu for a bright change of pace: from pastrami to pancakes and blintzes to their incredible matza ball soup. You won’t be disappointed, but, full disclosure, you might become addicted. www.barrysvillagedeli.com (617) 527-9773
Want a Good Corned Beef on Rye?
by Sallee Lipshutz | Jan 18, 2021 | Newton | 6 comments
I recently tried the extra lean corn beef at Michael’s Deli in Brookline. They make their own and it was excellent.
A few other favs from Barry’s:
Potato knish, potato salad, latke (I swear I eat more than just potatoes lol). I also love their tuna sandwiches and matzo ball soup.
Betraying my heritage somewhat, I go for their Rachel sandwich (Turkey, Swiss, Russian Dressing & Cole Slaw, Grilled on Rye Bread). But I do wash it down with Dr. Brown’s black cherry soda. Much healthier, no?
Thanks as always Sallee. I’ve been looking for a great seafood crab sandwich and will give it a try. Also Barry’s blueberry muffins are fantastic when eaten in moderation.
Okay, I’ve said something nice about Waban. How about something nice in the Highlands?
I hope you’ll also join me in supporting Barry’s Deli Fund. They’re raising money to ensure they can continue to pay all of their full time workers. Link here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-deli-fund
@Bob Burke: I love the Highlands and the fact that there is now a pastry shop near Waban! (Although that temptation is dangerous.) The amazing Victorian architecture that guides along Lincoln Street to the shops is refreshingly beautiful, while historic, even if the area is not designated as such. O’Hara’s oasis calls for all to gather while Focal Point Opticians and Highland Opticians help us all to see the myriad other shopping choices clearly! Waban is, indeed, fortunate to have the Highlands as its next door neighbor!!!
