For Week #6 of the Newton Photo Scavenger Hunt, here are five more photos of objects in Newton that are odd or charming — and rather unique, rather permanent, and visible from public property. Can you identify them?
The first person to write in the comments below the correct (and sufficiently precise) location of the object will win one point per object identified. At the end of the summer, whoever has the most points will win a $50 gift certificate for the Newton restaurant of the winner’s choice…and a V14 commemorative mug.
After five weeks of the scavenger hunt, the current totals are: Michael 7; 3 each for LisaP and Dave Brigham; 2 each for David Wallace, Fignewtonville, and Adam; and 1 each for Nanci Ginty Butler, Dalek, Bob Burke, Sean Roche, Maureen Reilly Meagher, and Michael’s son. Still unidentified from last week are 22. Phone Booth and 23 Ceramic Sculpture. Here’s Week 6:
I know 27! The City Stable on Crafts Street near the Whole Foods.
@Chuck: Correct! This “CIty Stable” sign seems to be forever proclaiming the status of the City as stable. I find that comforting. ;-)
Here in Needham we used to have a sign down on Charles River Street that said “Town Well.” I found similar comfort in that sign, until it was replaced with “No trespassing, trespassers will be met with armed response.”
#30 is the chandelier on the Upper Falls Greenway, behind Stop and Shop.
@Dalek: Correct! A vestige of the Upper Falls Greenway outdoor art exhibit.
I knew #30, but felt it would be unfair to chime in on that :)
#29 is the John Eliot Memorial (also known as Eliot Terrace) in Nonantum
Isn’t #28 in a yard on Chestnut st close to the intersection of chestnut and highland?
@Newton Highlands Mom: Correct! I noticed today that sometimes it’s blocked from view by a car in the driveway, but it’s there and generally visible.
I think #26 is on the Charles River path in Newtonville, near Wyoming Road.
@Dave Brigham: I have to say Correct! At first, I thought you were about a half-mile off. The Painted Turtle I photographed is on the Charles River Greenway path, but it’s just west of American Legion Post 440 in Nonantum, a half-mile away from Wyoming Rd. I walked from Wyoming Rd to there today, just to check. As I returned to Wyoming Rd., I was surprised to find *another* Painted Turtle etched into a rock along the path. I had thought each of the photographed objects in this scavenger hunt were rather unique, but here are the two of them — mine on the left and yours on the right. Congratulations and thanks for getting me out walking around and finding new things. That’s the objective of all of this, anyway.
@Bruce – thanks for making the effort to find the other painted turtle rock! I love those rocks along the path.
