Newton Wins the award for bringing back retirees to hold interim positions while searching for new blood. Not only do retirees get a nice salary they also get their pension. From principals, to NPD chief, to directors. Probably more we don’t know about.
Excellent news.
An egregious racial profiling of the Asim family occurred under Chief Mintz’s watch. While not as terrifying as the gun(s) drawn on Tim Duncan, the profiling itself was more flagrant.
There has never been an apology or even admission of a wrong by the Newton PD. Now is the time for the Newton PD to own up to the injustice, and perhaps learn from it so that profiling doesn’t continue to get repeated.

What happened to the former Northeastern University deputy athletic director Tim Duncan was terrible, but as an African American male, I really can’t complain how I’ve been treated over the years by the Newton Police.
I’ve only been racially profiled 4 times since 1963, the latest in 2002 when I was questioned by an officer who thought I appeared suspicious while dropping a letter off in the mailbox.
The most egregious and hurtful was in 1976 when I was stopped by an officer while walking home from Newton North High. I was asked what am I doing in this neighborhood, and my reply was quite simple “I’m walking home” and gestured to the Math and Science books in my hand.
