Dumpling House on Walnut Street, near Beacon. Their soup dumplings are as good as any in Chinatown in Boston.
Excellent article – I agree on all five in the list.
+1 on Dumpling House. I’d also add Jake’s Falafel in Newton Centre (tucked back in a corner), The Landing in Nonantum and, Baza on Needham Street. The last one isn’t so much a restaurant, but has good takeout options. It makes Needham Street a very interesting and underrated culinary destination when you add in Farm Grill, the New England Soup Factory, Pressed and (if you extend the circle slightly) The Biltmore and Dunn Gaherins.
Would love to have the return of a Kentucky Fried Chicken — occasional grease-up — to Newton.
(But maybe too plebeian for Newton, albeit there are two McDonalds’ in town.)
My daughter just tried Farmacy. New and very healthy. I will be trying. Its in the same building as Dumpling house.
I’m surprised more people haven’t discovered The Eatery in Newton Highlands on Hartford St. right by Lincoln.
Great Harvest has great pressed sandwiches. Lobster wok is terrific Chinese for takeout, not fancy but a great option and open late. There is the terrific Moldova in Nonantum. Rox diner for dinner (certainly not hidden for brunch!) brewers coalition for its great burger and beer deals and kids eat free on Tuesday I think.
It’s not so hidden for people on V14, but to anyone who never noticed L’Aroma tucked behind West Newton square, it’s a great coffee shop.
Also, if you’ve never tried their curry, make a point to!
Galit’s Treats
Knotty Pine! Super old school!
Galit’s Treats has rediculously limited hours. Don’t try to go today. Not open. M-F 8am to 2pm. Sat 9am to 2pm.
Galit’s is excellent for a mid-morning treat or lunch. Wish she had the ability to be open more, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s a fantastic spot.
“Olivia’s” on Adams Street in Nonantum which has some of the very best Italian food I’ve had in the Boston area. This is somewhat ironic since the place is owned, managed and operated by some gracious free spirits who have emigrated here from Ireland over the past 30 years. I’m waiting to have their new on the menu Lamb Shank. I’m a big fan of Lamb Shanks and I’m pretty certain this will be among the very best I’ve ever enjoyed.
We talk a lot about affordable housing. Why not affordable restaurant meals other than pizza, subs or burgers?
How about requiring a Denny’s, IHOP, Friendly’s or Waffle House in Northland. One of those would be my fave for family prices!
Jim,
We are huge fans of the Fribble and the Jim Dandy. A little known commitment in NND is the 10,000 square feet of retail space to be offered at a discount to local businesses. We would be happy to make that a Friendlys, if it would help earn your support. Imagine enjoying a cold vanilla fribble on a warm spring day on the Village Green set against the newly exposed north side of the historic mill. :)
I miss the Conehead sundaes. :'(
Master P.,
A Friendly’s would certainly be welcome, especially in view of the lack of that type of lower priced family style restaurant anywhere in Newton other than Cabot’s in Newtonville. Hence, a substantially sized Northland Friendly’s outlet would seem to be warranted.
Having said that, if you read back through my comments here on v14, I have generally not been in opposition to your Northland project, which is precisely why I repeatedly called for a way to avert the referendum through some modest reduction in the number of apartment units as a reach out to RightSize, and offsetting your loss of profit and revenue by eliminating the expense of the (IMHO misguidedly imposed) bus shuttles, with the project’s scope reduction offsetting the supposed benefits of the shuttles.
In that regard, I’ll suggest what could possibly be your last chance to avert the referendum and save Northland — and be a win-win-win for Developer, RightSize and City — but would require very careful preparation, planning, coordination, communication and drafting, all presumably through your legal counsel, as follows:
Immediately meet with authorized RightSize representative(s) and work out a tentative reduction in project scope, along the lines as I suggest above. Then approach City Counsel to vote at the January 21 session to approve the revised plan as an alternative permitted plan. Under an agreement with RightSize on this to accompany the agreed project modification, there is agreement to then replace the originally permitted Northland Plan with the revised plan, having the effect of rendering the existing referendum moot thereby freeing RightSize to withdraw the petition (because it would seek reversal of a permit which no longer exists).
Admittedly this procedure is complex and tricky, but it can be accomplished (and if you request at no cost I’ll assist your legal counsel with careful guidance).
Otherwise, you’re at the mercy of the referendum.
That giant sucking sound you hear is another perfectly fine community interest thread being drawing into the stormy deep by the kraken of Newton online political discourse.
We need zoning for V14 posts, with limited special permits.
What Mike said. Geesh Jim, give it a rest.
Greg & Mike,
Masterplanner was reaching out and asking for my project support. And since I’m in no position to sway the vote one way or another, I’ve merely suggested a possible late stage route to save Northland from the vagaries of the referendum.
Also, Aji Sushi in Newtonville is very good.
This isn’t hidden, but has anyone tried Hopsters in Newton Corner?
Sakayana is a wonderful sushi take-out place in Nonantum. We have gone there for years (they were formerly in Brighton) and now we’re very excited they’re in Newton! They have the freshest, most delicious fish anywhere and they’re family-owned by a lovely Japanese family. Also a great place to get Japanese food items such as rice and soy sauce.
Jeez- I was really enjoying this thread until I crashed into @Jim and his tired worn out polemic. Please , please give it a rest.
Four Spoons is one of our favorite spots – take out and dining in.
