Newton City Councilor Jake Auchincloss reportedly raised “more than” $609,000 since declaring his candidacy in October for the seat now held by Joe Kennedy III, the Globe reports. Jesse Mermell of Brookline raised $351,000.
The article did not have the latest numbers from fellow Newton councilor/candidate Becky Grossman (and the other candidates) but noted that Grossman had $145,548 in her account.

Hear hear!
I would be very interested to know more about his money…residence of donors and size of donation
And how many are from outside Newton?
How much of this was in small contributions? Also, why aren’t Dave Cavell, Alan Khazei, and Ihssane Leckey listed here?
Wait, never mind.
“Alan Khazei of Brookline had $353,218 in his account while Becky Walker Grossman of Newton had $145,548 and Ihssane Leckey of Brookline had $81,377.
The sixth candidate for the 4th District is David Cavell of Brookline. Cavell has not yet filed a report for the fourth quarter or issued a press release on fundraising activity. The fourth quarter reports are due on Jan. 31.”

Im glad Jake is doing well with his fundraising. I think he has served Newton well by being an independent voice on the council, using well-reasoned arguments backed by researched facts in anything he supports, willing to listen to residents before making decisions and then explaining his reasoning to others via his newsletter, on Facebook and in person. The above is why we need him in Congress.
I don’t know why the usual suspects jump to judgement immediately over how his campaign raised funds – he hasn’t even raised the most of all the candidates – he’s second out of 6.
Nobody should underestimate the significance of Jake’s accomplishment in raising this amount in just one quarter, especially given Khazei’s head start and Grossman’s father-in-law advantage. This puts to doubts any questions as to the viability of Jake’s candidacy. He’ll be a serious contender with the resources to tell his story to the voters outside of Newton who don’t know him, and it’s an especially compelling story, from his educational background to his military service to his demonstrated record of success on the City Council. Key district newspapers like the Attleboro Sun Chronicle and the Fall River Herald News have already begun significant coverage of Jake’s candidacy. It’s too bad Newton doesn’t have an actual local news outfit to cover the campaign, too.
I believe Jake is the front runner and he is surging.
