Students in my Beat Journalism class at Boston University are looking to interview Newton residents for the following issue-oriented stories:
- Pot holes
- Street lights
- Mental health in the high schools
- Equity in the elementary schools
- Teachers’ contract (parents)
- School buildings
If you are willing, email [email protected] and let us know as soon as possible.
Thanks!
Gail,
Being a minority person (conservative) living in Newton, as sometimes reflected in my V14 comments and in other forums, I’m assuming that you’re not intending that your students work with someone like me.
Of course, let me — and others who may share some of my views — know if this is not the case.
Thanks.
Jim, certainly pot holes and street lights can be considered non-partisan territory.
Peter,
I wasn’t referring to pot holes and street lights. Rather, the other items.
And BTW, I’m against pot holes (need to be fixed) and in favor of street lights (keep em lit) –if Gail is limiting input to those items.
Jim, as a professional journalist I believe Gail will seek varied viewpoints irregardless of political registrations. Hopefully, you will be contacted.
Peter,
I doubt that Gail will address this on even this her own thread, so I’ll be surprised if she contacts me.
As you probably know, Newton civic leaders and journalists favor diversity for ALL groups, that is, EXCEPT for conservatives.
Added to that, Gail is working for the Boston Globe!!! (So I won’t be holding my breath waiting…)
One important issue that Gail should cover is reducing the size of the Newton City Council.
Jim, conservatives should be heard from and I trust that Gail will reach out to you.
Peter,
It’s a no-brainer to reduce City Council from 24 to 16 (one ward & one at-large for each ward). What else is there to say?
Jim, I agree but it will not happen because the Council will be reduced by 8 Councilors and everyone wants to protect their own turf, health benefits and potential pensions after 10 years of service. That’s why I’m suggesting a news story that gets Councilors on the record!
Gail,
There you go, see Peter Karg’s above comment, a great news story for a student in your class!
Peter,
Don’t hold your breath waiting…
Why should the interview (s) be restricted to the above items? There are many other topics that deserve being addressed. Are the students being shielded from them? They would do well to follow this blog. Or have they even been made aware of it?
Noting the conservative minority, I would argue that Newton – specifically politics and V14 – also shuns the under represented majority (moderates).
And curious…why is Development not on Gail’s list of stories?
Peter,
So far from Gail — — crickets!
