The Boston Globe is reporting that Newton Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III plans to formally announce Saturday that he is launching a primary challenge to Senator Edward J. Markey,
Globe: Joe Kennedy to run for U.S. Senate

Most unfortunate and divisive. And wasteful.
Pat, agreed. Markey has been a quiet leader, but I’ve seen his office make a real difference. Nothing against Joe.
According to polls, bye bye Ed Markey!
LOL
Personally, when Markey made the move from the House to the Senate it smacked of pure ambition. Now he is being challenge by Kennedy looking to make the move from the House to the Senate which smacks of pure ambition. I’d like to replace them both with some fresh ideas and new faces who would be strong allies to a new Democratic President
The polls show Kennedy beating out Markey. Newton Dems will have a tough choice.
Now let the guessing game begin. Who is running for Kennedy’s congressional seat?
Is this one small part of one of Warren’s myriad plans to prevent Baker from appointing her successor? 3D chess.
Kennedy is the definition of white male privilege. You can walk down any street in Newton and find people with greater life accomplishments that merit being a Congressman or Senator.
He has no business being our representative. We can do so much better than him.
Paul, when you say “we can do so much better,” aren’t Markey and Kennedy pretty much the same in terms of hard working, policy, voting and constituent service? The only real difference is that Markey came from the working class and Kennedy from the privileged class. (Unless you count as also important that one is older than the other.)
Having said that, are you implying that “we can do so much better” than Markey too?
And, if both about equal, perhaps the Kennedy name can give our state more political attention and cachet.
@Jim Epstein
The only real difference is NOT that Kennedy came from a privileged family. Plenty of well-off people make their own mark in the world. Joe Kennedy skipped the step of doing anything on his own and jumped to feeling like he is in a position to shape society.
I’m no Markey fan, but think we should all insist on better candidates than Kennedy who has done nothing on his own other than be a good-looking Kennedy. Joe Kennedy was born on third base, and he’s still there. Markey at least got to where he is primarily on his own efforts. Huge difference.
