The Friends of Hemlock Gorge invite everyone to the dedication of a granite memorial bench honoring the late Brian Yates — a founding member of the FHG, its third president, a Newton City Councilor for three decades, and an untiring environmentalist. The dedication will be held August 6 (rain date August 7) at 5:30PM near the Stone Building at 1330 Boylston Street, at the corner of Ellis Street and the connector to Route 9 (map). The memorial bench overlooks the Charles between the Stone Building and the Ken Newcomb memorial.

Following the ceremony, the FHG will hold its annual summer picnic. A charcoal grill and music will be provided. Bring your own food and drink, chairs or blankets, and perhaps insect repellent. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, but parking close to the site is very limited. There’s a small parking lot near the Stone Building and another in Needham at the intersection of Central Ave. (extension of Newton’s Elliot Street) and Hamilton Place.
