From Mayor Fuller:

| Newton MA News and Politics Blog“A City of Newton 20-inch water main on Needham Street in front of the Nexus complex broke this afternoon at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Water crews are working hard to shut off the water, a process that is complicated and time intensive. That process is still underway.

Once the water is shut off, crews will excavate the buckled pavement to expose the pipe and determine the nature of the break. How the pipe split will impact how long it will take to repair or replace the main.

For now, Needham Street from Winchester Street to Oak Street is closed, impacting traffic on Route 9 and Walnut Street as well as on the other side of Needham Street, including Winchester, Nahanton, and Oak Streets.

Quite a few residents and businesses are without water at this time. Check the City websitefor updated information.

Crews from the Department of Public Works Utilities Division, and members of the Newton Police and Fire Departments are on the scene and surrounding areas working on the water main and detouring traffic.”
