Newton Highlands is kicking off the summer with a bang this weekend.
Tonight 6-8 PM the Summer in the Highlands series kicks off with a free concert at the Hyde Playground (Lincoln St) by the Studio 2 Beatles Band, followed by an outdoor movie. Every Friday night, from today through Labor Day, you can head to the Hyde for wonderful free entertainment of every variety – blues, jazz, rock and roll, theater. Tonight it all begins for 2019.
Sunday is the annual Highlands Village Day extravaganza, The Road Race starts at 10 AM with on-site registration at the Hyde Center. Village Day kicks off at 11 AM on Lincoln St and runs until 4 PM with non-stop music at two different stages – East (jazz), West (youth and rock), roving magicians, face painting, bouncy castle, food, drink and fun.
This weekend, head to the Highlands … and make it a Friday night habit for the rest of the summer.
@Jerry. Thanks for posting this. It had to have been a record turnout for Friday Evening’s Studio 2 Beetles Band show at the Hyde bandstand Pavilion. Hope we get another record turnout for Village Day that kicks off later this morning. One thing that makes our Village Day so special is that almost all the activities are concentrated in the remarkably preserved village center on Lincoln Street. Most of this center still looks essentially the same way it appears in photographs from the end of the 19th century and you just know that it is the unique feel of our village center that makes Village Day so special for those fortunate enough to attend.
I want to do a shout out to the great volunteers that step up to make Highlands Village Day a success. I’m fortunate to do this work with Maureen Oates (5K race coordinator), Chris Pitts (music coordinator/leader/jazz sax), and all the area councilors like Amy Wayne, Groot Gregory, Barbara Darnell, Srdj Nedeljkovic and Bruce Henderson. Special thanks, as always, to the man that makes so many things happen for us, the only volunteer with a day named after him (Nov 4?): John Rice!
We could not put the event on without the generosity of our sponsors, lead by The Village Bank along with Salon Capri, Brookline Bank. Support also came from O’Hara’s Food & Spirits and the law firm of Schlesinger & Buchbinder.
Thanks also to the weather!
Mark your calendars for next year. Highlands Village Day will take place on June 7, 2020!
Steve
What a lovely weekend to be in the Highlands!
