This isn’t just a Newton story, but since the issue of safety in regards to Lime bikes has come up here I thought I’d share this TechCrunch story.
Lime is putting $3 million toward a new safety initiative called “Respect the Ride.”
The gist of the campaign is to facilitate more responsible riding, while also ensuring Lime provides its riders with a reliable fleet of vehicles.
Some of the elements include free helmets, developing “virtual parking zones” and systems that warn when people are riding on the sidewalks. There has been a lot of concern about Lime scooters, which have been pulled from many cities because of fire concerns, but those are not available here.
“On the heels of Lime notifying the public about needing to recall some of its scooters due to fire concerns, Lime is putting $3 million toward a new safety initiative called ‘Respect the Ride.'” https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/31/lime-recalls-some-scooters-due-to-fire-concerns/
Is that an initiative or reactive damage control?
For context it looks like they are approaching a run rate of 20 million rides per year and they have raised nearly a half a billion in venture capital.
I like the idea and the bike availability, but have found my knees can’t handle the poor gearing and low saddle height.
