Police say a 23-year-old man stabbed a 79-year-old man at the Auburndale Star Market this afternoon. According to news reports, it happened this afternoon around 2 pm and police have Matthew Muradov in custody.
They’re calling it a random stabbing.
I heard that Muradov was caught, in part, thanks to an employee who is a former police officer and kept an eye on the suspect until police arrived.
What a horrible happening.
On a slightly lighter note, also from the Patch police blotted – an Auburndale man was charged with”breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny under $250, and and being a common and notorious criminal .
I love that last part
How horrible! Any news on how the victim is doing?
I am hoping that the 79 year old man wasn’t hurt too seriously and that he recovers from his wounds quickly and completely. The young man who is a suspect is a graduate of Newton South High School, class of 2013. I hope that he gets the help he needs.
@Meredith – the original police report said that they did not believe that the injuries were life threatening.
There’s an interesting story buried here that none of the TV stations or newspapers have gotten to yet. From what I understand, one of the employees there is a former police officer and he took control of the situation. Apparently, he is also the reason the police were able to identify and nab the suspect so quickly.
Their stories have all been pretty perfunctory, showing the crime scene, doing a live shot, quoting standard stuff from the police, etc.
Once again mental health need to be addressed. We keep tap dancing around it and look at what continues to happen.
While I agree that mental health needs to be addressed, more access and more funding, assuming the stabber has a mental disability is dangerous. Most, by a huge amount, people with a mental disability are victims rather than perpetrators.
It’s not an assumption:
At an arraignment on Tuesday, Muradov’s attorney said his client has a history of mental health issues and that he had just been released from hospital care.
Turns out this guy was living in the group home in our neighborhood. You can bet the building management, Ward 1 councilors, and the Mayor’s office are heading about this.
