The Newton Cultural Alliance has put together an event onTuesday, Oct 17, 7:30 PM to explore our mayoral candidates’ thoughts, policies and ideas about the city’s role in promoting arts, culture, and creativity in Newton.
The event will be at the Boston Ballet Schools brand new digs down on 153 Needham St and will be moderated by WBUR’s Senior Producer – Arts Engagement, Louise Kennedy.
Head on down to Boston Ballet on Needham St tonight at 7:30 to hear the mayoral candidates discuss arts, culture and creativity in Newton.
The one form of art that all the candidates appear to be strongly supporting is storytelling. The Newton Nomadic Theater has 20 candidates signed up to tell a personal story at the Nomad Story Slam-Election Edition on Fri Nov 3. Most of the tickets ($10) are already gone, so get them while you can. Sorry, I can’t ever resist one more opportunity for a plug ;-)
This was an interesting event and a smart move by the organizers to get the candidates talking about and committing to issues that they rarely, if ever, are asked about.
If I could nit-pick, it’s unfortunate that neither candidate mentioned how awesome the brand new Boston Ballet School building is.
There was lots of discussion tonight about how Newton needs new arts facilities but no acknowledgment that we were sitting in one.
Boston Ballet could have located its new school in any of a number of communities but thanks to a public private partnership with the Newton Nexus developer, Crosspoint, they stayed in Newton.
Developers are easily criticized in Newton but here’s an example where they did something significant for our city and the arts.
