Newton is on a Nobelic roll this year. Congratulations to Newton resident and MIT Professor Emeritus Rainer Weiss for receiving the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics.
Without Rainer Weiss and his two colleagues Barry Barish and Kip Thorne (not to be confused with Rip Torn), none of us would know how to measure gravitational waves in space. Thanks for that Rai !
Couldn’t have been given to a more deserving guy. And proof that flunking out of one’s first attempt at college is no barrier to scientific success (or, conversely, that being a brilliant scientist doesn’t mean you’ll be good at the classroom grind).

In a city where it often feels like everyone believes they’re an expert, it’s humbling to be surrounded by individuals who actually are.
