Tonight the Newton City Council’s Programs and Services Subcommittee will meet to discuss 2 proposed immigration ordinances, either of which would arguably make Newton a so-called sanctuary city. Link to the agenda for tonight is here.
One ordinance was filed by Mayor Warren, the Chief of Police, and Council President Lennon, while the other was filed by Councilor Albright and a number of her fellow councilors.
Some background on the dueling ordinances was recently featured in the TAB.
Where: Newton City Hall on Commonwealth Ave, in the Council Chambers
When: TONIGHT, 7pm
Personally, I am hopeful that the city council finds a way to come together and pass an ordinance that includes strong protections for immigrants in our city that both sides of this discussion can support.
I’d rather not. Let’s keep it the way it is unless Newton wants to loose their “safest city” status anytime soon by harboring illegal immigrants. The councilors don’t even want to protect the legal immigrants that run landscape business by micromanaging their backpack blower uses and now they want to protect illegals?! It’s been fine all these years and I trust our law enforcement agencies, leave it be!
My parents were priveleged to come to this country from Italy and became legal citizens that abided by the law. They didn’t get special help like section 8 for free housing, or free food or drugs/healthcare. They earned their status and learned to speak English while working in factories days and nights albeit broken English, but the learned because they had to adapt!
