Governors Council Candidate Marilyn Devaney generated some controversy during the last campaign when she claimed to have received some endorsements from folks who reportedly did not give permission to do so. Not sure if that’s the case this time but among her current list of endorsers is Newton Mayor “Sette” Warren.
‘Sette’ Warren endorses Marilyn Devaney

She doesn’t list him on her website – but it says it is a partial list. Why put him on the mailer and not on her website? Of course the mailer is confusing since it lists her “interests.”

Go Bill!!
Vote Bill Humphrey on September 8th! Every vote counts.
Marilyn Devaney is easily the least worthy public servant representing Newton from any office at this time. I wonder what our mayor was thinking.

… I could go on but I think folks get the idea.
We don’t know if he endorsed her. She’s been known to falsely claim endorsements in the past, and if he wrote her an endorsement you’d think she’d be competent to cut and paste his name correctly.
If I read something from the office of the mayor saying he endorses her, then I’ll believe it, but not until then.
Her current OCPF filings are full of gaps with many audits for missing reports. She has reported ~$129,000 in contributions while Bill Humprey has reported ~$12,000. There’s not much time left before September 8 and he’s still knocking. Hopefully that will make the difference and his actual endorsements.
I don’t know whether our mayor endorsed her or not and won’t until I hear from his office one way or another but I do doubt anything thing Devaney says. If he did, I’m on board that we need a new mayor.
Marti –
Without getting too far into the campaign finance weeds, you might be looking at her cumulative fundraising figures across all cycles going back many many years. I see a recent candidate loan of $20,000, as she makes every year, but that’s about it. (Boy, I wish I had that kind of money! People my age don’t get paid very much these days.) The other candidate loaned his campaign more money than I make in a year and then some.
But, and I guess we’ll find out in a week’s time whether the strategy worked, it’s significantly less expensive to run a campaign when you don’t have consultants who get paid by the ad buy and don’t have paid staff because several dozen people stepped up to volunteer and knock on doors. I raised exactly as much money as I needed and then spent the rest of my time meeting with voters. (I also suspect the other two campaigns may have significantly over-estimated the turnout for this election by literally 100% or more. I won’t say here the details of my model that I produced before deciding to run, but suffice it to say it will not be anywhere near the September 2014 turnout that would require many times the amount of money I raised.) I’m a big proponent of reducing the burdens and warped incentives of campaign finance by running a strong field campaign powered by volunteers. My friends and I have also run enough campaigns that we did not feel it necessary to hire a consultant, which often sharply distorts the costs.
Again, I guess we’ll find out how far off the mark I am on all of this next week.
Bill, I watched the NewTv debate Vimeo. You did great. Thank you for correcting my comment. Good luck next Thursday.
To prove once again why I am not nice enough for that other blog, Devaney looked stoned and Georgiou looked like a nasty bulldog. It was funny to hear how they referenced Newton, particularly Devaney not being able to come up with the name of I forget which one of our reps. I also enjoyed Georgiou saying he is the most progressive candidate.
