Along the Charles River in Waltham, near West Newton, a new bike/ped deck has just been completed.
People used to have to make a complicated detour on busy roads to get from the Moody Street Dam to the resumption of the Greenway at Elm St. Now, thanks to the MA Dept of Conservation and Recreation and the City of Waltham, we have this:
The new deck makes biking/jogging/walking much safer, whether to shops on Moody Street or an excursion toward Boston. If the rain holds off, the next couple of days will be a great time to try it out!
Fantastic news! That was an ugly detour to take. I’m glad the property owner did the right thing and allowed this. Now it’s time for Newton to get to work and connect Auburndale to the Southern Charles River path through the Lower Falls.
That’s excellent news. Despite having lived in Newton for 20 years, I only discovered the Charles River Greenway this summer, and it became part of one of my favorite bike routes.
I’m so happy about this, you have no idea. It now makes for a very easy bike ride along the river all the way out to the Cove.
Interesting that the rail bridge seems to have also come down. The portion of the old rail south to the Chemistry appears to have major encroachments. Is the northern section of the branch part of the trail?
@Newtoner, any idea what the status is in the Lower Falls? Is it still in the courts?
@Adam, I don’t know the status at the Lower Falls. I did discover recently some newly opened trails behind Riverside Station and Recreation Road in Weston, but there are still a lot of missing sections, most painfully around the golf course and Route 30 in Weston, where there are dangerous sections without a sidewalk. It would be amazing if Cutler Park could be connected to the Cove.
I biked the path yesterday and this is a great addition to the Greenway.
It may be one of the best bridge crossings because it goes under the bridge and up a ramp to the other side. Walkers, runners and bikers do not have to cross traffic!
I used to bike commute from Nonantum to just past Moody St. That gap was the most harrowing part.
Well, that and all the broken glass bottles and needles that started piling up as the summer went on.
