bicycles | Newton MA News and Politics BlogStarting June 1, Route 9 will be switched over to one lane for cars in both the eastbound and westbound routes.  The righthand lane will become a dedicated bike track with a safety barrier to keep the cars and bikes apart

This is the culmination of five years of work, lobbying at the State House, by Wheels Are Us, an alliance of organizations including the Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force, Bike Newton, Wellesley Wheels, and Brookline Bikes!

Says local Newton bicycle advocate, and Village14 founder Sean Roche “It’s about time.  Route 9 is one of the main commuting routes into Boston and bicycles have always played second fiddle to cars there”.  With this success under their belt, Wheels Are Us is ready for the even tougher battle ahead – the Mass Turnpike.
