The Engine 6 proposal, to build housing for the chronically homeless in the old Waban fire station, took a new turn today.

Roughly 30 supporters of the Engine 6 proposal, along with the Disability Law Center and the Fair Housing Center of Boston filed a formal complaint today with HUD – the federal government’s Dept of Housing and Urban Development.

The letter accuses the city of housing discrimination under the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, The Fair Housing Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act and requests that HUD carry out a review of Newton’s compliance with the HOME, CDBG and Emergency Solution Grants regulations.

The letter concludes by asking HUD to determine that the city did engage in discrimination based on disability and ask that the city be ordered to immediately approve the funding for the Engine 6 proposal.
