Email from the Superintendent. I sure hope he didn’t jinx it.

Dear Newton Community,

As you are undoubtedly aware, it has been an unimaginable year of weather.  Beginning with the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and continuing with the storms we have had over the past month, we have missed six days of school.

We build in five extra days at the end of the school calendar for school cancellations, which would have made June 25ththe last day for students.  However, yesterday’s cancellation requires us to add an additional day to the calendar.  Our options to make up the day are to go to school on Good Friday, take a day from April vacation, or extend the school year for one more day.

After careful consideration, I have decided that it is most feasible to add a day to the end of the year.  Thus the final day for students, as of today, will be June 26th.    I fully recognize that going so late in June is not ideal for students who are stated to start summer activities earlier than June 26th, but believe it is the only viable alternative.

Given the unpredictability of the weather, we will not be announcing the official last day of school for another few weeks.  I do hope that you do not have to hear my voice in the early morning hours for the rest of this school year.  Many thanks for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

David
