I totally understand that the City is pre-occupied with Covid-19 and how that impacts schools, the local economy, tax revenue and expenditure.
It’s important though that the City Council not ignore some of the other pressing issues facing us that have been ignored for far too long.
Jerry- thanks so much for bringing this to my attention- I always thought “boneless” would suffice but your thoughtful link has shown me the error of my ways. Will docket something ASAP. I am sure David Olson will drop everything and help me with this. The urgency is obvious.
@Brenda Noel – Thank you for you prompt and urgent action in taking this up. I have confidence that if we can focus that 24 member brain trust like a laser on the issue we can resolve it once and for all to nearly everyone’s satisfaction.
I already heard from Councilor Downs and she is firmly in the “Saucy Nugs” camp. That said, I wouldn’t underestimate though the strength of the “Wet Tenders” caucus. For me, I’m hoping that the council is bold and coins it’s own Newton nomenclature “Poultry Hunks?”, “ChickyBits”?
Real environmentalists eat a plant based diet. Boneless by design. Problem solved.
Except for these.
@Emily Norton – Real environmentalists support high density housing
@Jimbo: Diet is way higher priorityway.
Jimbo, that was not in the spirit of this important post. Boo on you. Also, eat more saucy nuns and you won’t get hangry my momma always said.
Here’s the problem. This would go to committee, then get talked about for months on end. We’d have 6 or 7 public hearings. After the last public hearing, several small groups on various listservs would hear about it and complain that their voices weren’t heard. Emails would be sent to city council.
Then, somehow, it would get written so that every time a restaurant in Newton wanted to change the name of any menu item it would need to come back for a special permit.
Their chambers have nicer seats than our hard, church pew benches (and more comfortable looking than most flights). Travesty! Where is Lincoln, Nebraska getting all that added tax revenue?
I share Chuck’s concern. We could have 23-0-1 support (Councilor Baker will abstain because he was busy grading papers and didn’t have time to read the item and his motion to return it to committee failed) but the law department will say municipalities don’t have the authority.
And by the way, the Chamber opposes this. If we outlaw them here people are just going to go eat in Wellesley.
Buffalo wings are also a problem; we all know they don’t have wings. I think.
The Zen philosopher, Basho, once wrote, ‘A flute with no holes, is not a flute. A donut with no hole, is a Danish.
A chicken wing without a bone is a …
@Jimbo: In a hat tip to artistic expression, John Belushi said “Sorry ..” …
Once we get this out of the way we can move on to “Veggie Burgers”
And oak “milk”
Veggie burgers are a type of burger. I will organize and write letters if you go down that route.
I hear Somerville has already adopted best practices terminology for askeletal poultry.
While we are on the topic, I have always had a problem with jumbo shrimp! Thanks for the levity after a long stretch of angst! I especially enjoyed the process humor. Everything funny is routed in truth!

Hi Jerry, you know, when I first saw the headline I thought this was actually going to ask if our City Council might jump into some of the school opening discussions, especially the High Schools? They’re elected to represent us, and this is one of the biggest, most challenging issues in memory. The standard ways of thinking….that’s the School Committee’s responsibility, not ours….or, I’m not comfortable criticizing another elected official need to be revisited as clearly things aren’t working very well. There’s waaaay too much let’s “wait and see” on this one while our kids have to deal with the results of some pretty poor advance planning!
Sorry for being so serious, not just playing along. Everyone I see in the community is talking about the schools, it’s on EVERYONE’s minds, even if things have been quiet for a few days about it on V14.
Ding, ding, ding – Village14 Coined Phrashe of the Week goes to Rhanna Kidwell for “askeletal poultry”.
Michael Slater – yes, schools are indeed on everyone’s minds these days.
Chuck Tanowitz – time for you to become a Wikipedia editor. Says Wikipedia – “A hamburger is a sandwich consisting of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a sliced bread roll or bun.”
Many thanks to ex City Councilor Jim Cote for passing along this most excellent video. Now that the burdens of countless nights in the Newton City Council Chamber have been lifted from his shoulders, Jim now has the time to watch other City Council meetings from all around the country.
@jerry that is a “hamburger” … not a burger.
This is why we need special permitting for menu changes.
Now that Buff’s pub takes credit cards, anything is possible
Brookline must have done this already…because where Brookline goes, Newton is sure to follow. Birds of a feather….
@Chuck: Are you calling Newton’s burghers chicken? Or asking of them, “Where’s the beef?”
