On Wednesday, the City Council’s Programs & Services Committee will discuss a proposal that would require stores to charge a 10-cent fee for paper bags and also eliminate the plastic bag ban exemption for small retailer stores of less than 3,500 sq. ft. The item was docketed by Councilors Leary, Norton, Auchincloss, Brousal Glazer, Danberg, Kalis and Markowitz
Nickel and diming the public!!!
No one on the City Council gives a damn about consumers. Retailers throughout the city routinely ignore state law that require individual pricing of items and cash register screens that are clearly visible to consumers. Non internet savvy seniors are particularly vulnerable to retailers like Walgreens that offer two different prices for the exact same item–one price for “members”, different price for “non-members.” The City Council ignores those things, while it whacks everyone for a lousy dime.
What is the status of the pay raise these folks are going to get?
What has the special commission been discussing Greg? Arent you on it? Are the lifetime health benefits still in play?
Go for it. Probably less than a dollar a week even for families. For empty nesters, maybe 20 cents and it may remind me to bring the bag sitting in my car into the store.
Go for it. I already do my grocery shopping in Waltham and can easily do everything else there, too…..
Who gets the money? City, or retailer? How much money are we talking about here?
research shows fees are more effective at modifying behavior and increasing reusable bag use:

@max Goldsmith. The retailer keeps the dime.
