For those in Newton Upper Falls, Waban and Newton Highlands, don’t forget to vote in your Area Council races as well.
Jerry Reilly put together a special election edition of the Upper Falls News that includes statements from the Newton Upper Falls Area Council candidates. Here is the link: http://bit.ly/1Phl2Ea
anyone know why the Newtonville area council elections aren’t held the same day?
I’m happy to vote for Rhanna Kidwell, Josh Krintzman and Tom Sheff for the Charter Commission. Three independent thinking individuals who are totally committed to Newton.
Also, will be voting for Brian Yates and Jake in Ward 2.
For charter review, my list, in ballot order, is…
Peter Bruce
Jane Frantz
Joshua Krintzman
Megan Risen Meirav
Charles Shapiro
Thomas Sheff
Kathryn Winters
Wenhua Zhang
9th is a toss-up between Howard Haywood and Rhanna Kidwell
I picked this group based on their impartiality, skill set, and their knowledge of what it takes to make democracy work better in Newton.
@fignewtonville, The first, and now second, election was tied to Village Day likely to increase the profile of that the first election. May be a good topic fall the Newtonville Area Council to think about if the turnout was lower than one would from a municipal election.
@Everyone, For those in the Upper Falls, Waban and Highlands service areas you can now vote at your regular polling place, thanks to David Olsen and the elections department.
Thanks, Jeffrey!
Thank you Doug and Jeffrey.
Thank you, Doug! And as for splitting spot #9 with Howard, that’s a compliment to me. Howard brings all of Jeffrey’s criteria and more to this position.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow! Don’t forget to flip over your ballot and vote YES for a Charter Commission.
And vote for Bryan Barash too!

The city still has outdated information posted regarding which streets are included in the service area for Highlands area council. I don’t know about other area councils.
The street list posted here is missing streets that were added earlier this year that are included on the updated map posted here, such as Richardson Rd, Crystal St, Laurel St (and probably others). Not all of these are shown by name on the map (e.g. Richardson). I could not find an updated street list elsewhere; the only list linked from the elections page is for Newtonville NAC. Two years ago, the street list took precedence over the map when determining eligibility. I hope that the polling places will have accurate lists despite what I found on the city web site (I emailed David Olson this evening).
Although the impact is small for Highlands, given only 6 people running for 9 spots, it is never a good thing to turn away eligible voters based on outdated information.
@Groot: Thanks for posting the info that everyone can vote in their regular polling place for neighborhood councils, a welcome change from two years ago.
Is anyone running as a write-in for the other 3 spots on the NHNAC?
So many great candidates for the Charter Commission. But without Tom Sheff, there would be no Charter review. Tom is a lifelong resident who understands the city and the mechanics of the Charter. He’d be a great addition to the Commission. I hope everyone will remember the work Tom has put in, when they vote for the Charter Commissioners.
All:
Just also wanted to post a thank you to everyone running. I may not agree with everyone, but I’m very appreciative of the hard work you’ve all put in, and how much you love our city. To you, and to all of your volunteers, and to the folks at the city who run our elections and the election volunteers, Thank You!
Cheers to all.
Ditto to what @fignewtonville said. Good luck to all the candidates!
Why thank you!

We are fortunate to have so many great candidates running for the Charter Commisdion, win or lose I am confident that any of the nine elected will do an outstanding job. Good luck to all. One final plug for Susan Albright, Marcia Johnson, Ted Hess-Mahan, Deb Crossley, David Kalis and Rick Lipof.
This has been a most unusual campaign season, and I too have enjoyed the camaraderie we’ve had among the 22 candidates for Charter Review Commission. And I hope that will continue after tomorrow.
However, that’s not going to keep me from making one last ask that people vote for me tomorrow. Sorry to make you look down the list to “S.”
Feel free to learn more about me at steele4newton.org
Thanks
Fig – You’ve made an incredible contribution to V14 in the last few months.
Thanks for your good wishes to the candidates. No matter the outcome, it’s been a great experience.
Cheers to you as well!
Thank you Doug and Jeffrey!
I agree with everyone who expressed pleasure with seeing so many wonderful candidates on the ballot. Newton rocks!
People who are viewing a thread like this certainly don’t need to be reminded to vote. So I won’t do that. But please remember that there are people who will forget that tomorrow is Election Day. Remind everyone you can to go and vote!!
Good luck to all of the candidates!!
@Bruce: at least 2 people are running as write-in candidates for the Highlands Area Council. Julius Starkman,
50 Cochituate Road and Nathaniel Lichtin, 53 Pine Crest Rd. Please vote for both – they’re awesome candidates
Why thank you Jane. That is kind of you to say.
Mike and fig you both rock.
Thanks Tom. Good luck tomorrow!
@Barbara: thanks for the write-in names for NHNAC.
I heard back from David Olson tonight and he stated that the polling locations will have updated street lists for the area council service areas (despite the list on the city web site being out of date).
Good morning! Perfect weather to get out and vote.
Most contributors to V14 have likely made up their minds, so this post is for those who read but never or rarely post.
Today is an opportunity to make sure that cool heads, thoughtfulness, mutual respect, and optimism prevail.
You have up to 9 Votes available to you for Charter Commission. I strongly suggest your first 3 votes go to Josh Krintzman, Rhanna Kidwell, and Peter Harrington. Newton is lucky to have them step up and offer to serve.
I sincerely hope you’ll make Charles N Shapiro your 4th vote. I’ll work to retain Ward Alderman representation, to ensure local neighborhood input on development with elected official accountability, and keep the public informed and included in every way possible.
Good luck to all the candidates today! Please vote SHAPIRO. Thank you for your support.
