Join residents of Newton Highlands, Newton and Beyond for the Annual Newton Highlands Village day on Sunday June 8th from 12 – 5. Festivities will take place along Lincoln Street between Walnut and Bowdoin with side walk sales from the village merchants and on the Hyde Playground with live music on the Bandstand. We have activities for children, our Silent Auction with donation from Newton Highlands and other Merchants, booths for Arts and Crafts, Food Vendors, and student-run games.
Some of my personal highlights:
- Ice cream at the Rox Cafe
- Wine and beer tasting at Walnut Market
- Food (in general)
It will be a grand time. This is the original Village Day in Newton and it’s never lost its luster. Come bid on our silent auction. Many great things and goodies and the weather looks to be terrific.
Every year this is do-not-miss event in Newton!
It’s going to be a gorgeous day. It is indeed the Village Day for us all to emulate. Come visit me at my company’s table and join us in “building” a community!
Just walked through. I think next year they may want to return to the old configuration, with the exception of having music at the bandstand. The merchants at the Walnut St. end of Lincoln St. looked really forlorn, like the Maytag Repairman, because of the center of activity moving to the Hyde Playground..
I didn’t win the Tom Brady-signed football like I’d hoped. 🙁
Great event. My one issue, if any – half the tables and setups we’re packing up at 4pm instead of 5.
Had fun!
I, too, preferred the tables along the main street. I wonder what the feedback from the businesses were? Do they prefer the activities on their doorstep? Was business better then? Or with the activity out of the way and not blocking business?
It seemed to me that the whole village looked pretty deserted save for the activities at the Hyde Center … just wondering what the village felt.
I like the old set up! Walking on the grass was a challenge to older folks, and those with wheel chairs and strollers. I like the band stand, however our beloved Green Planet Kids and Walnut Street Market were lone tables wayyyyyy over there with a LOT of nothing in between.
I loved the bounce house and I did NOT miss the kiddie rides. Village Day was better without them.
It was hard to know the Bread and Chocolate was offering a Fried Chicken plate for Village Day.
The best part of the day was “Jackson” the eighth grade magician that was roaming the street and doing tricks for the younger kids. My kid loved it as did I.
I think a mash-up of the old and new set-ups could work well. Bounce house and music at the playground, tables and food along Lincoln the way they’ve always been.
We LOVE village day!! But, agree with the concerns over this year’s set-up. The bounce houses and music were great, but it was sad to see things so quiet along Lincoln near all the shops! Agree with mgwa that music/bounce houses at the Hyde Center, with the main stands/activities along Lincoln St would keep a better flow of activity.
As someone whose only child is taller and weighs more than me, the bounce house has long stopped being an attraction for my family. So I was much more interested in what the merchants were offering and felt bad that they lost out on the foot traffic. However, I’m optimistic that Alderman John Rice, the Highlands Area Council and merchants will work together finding a better solution for Newton’s original village day in 2015.
However, lost in the change and and the comments here, is the biggest news to come out of the Highlands since the band stand was built last year. Look for a separate thread about that shortly.
