Happy Friday, all!
As far as I can tell, it seems to be a pretty quiet weekend on the arts front. That’s good news though, you can go to everything. The Newton Choral Society is presenting a particularly spectacular concert this Sunday!
This Larger Truth Artist Panel
New Art Center*
Friday, March 22 from 7pm-8:30pm | FREE
Come hear about NAC’s exhibit, This Larger Truth, from the artists. This Larger Truth: Transformation and Identity Then and Now in the work of Boston artists John Murray, Robert Freeman, Nan Freeman, Marlon Forrester and Hakim Raquib investigates the legacies of the Boston busing crisis and race relations in the 1970s through the art and personal experiences of five Boston artists. All of the paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media, sculpture and photo-based work from both 1970s and today deal with issues of transformation and change formally, conceptually and emotionally.
Haydn: The Creation
Newton Choral Society*
Sunday, March 24 at 3pm
Sanders Theatre, Harvard University | $30-$35
Newton Choral Society, under the direction of David Carrier, will present Die Schöpfung (TheCreation) by Franz Joseph Haydn, considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The chorus and orchestra will be joined by soloists Kendra Colton, soprano; Peter Halpern, tenor; and David Kravitz, baritone.
Filled with ground-breaking orchestral color, and creative interplay between chorus, instruments and text, it still offers tremendous vividness and emotional power more than two centuries later. From chaos to dazzling sunlight, lions and tigers, whales and worms, Haydn’s forceful and original telling of the creation story is not to be missed!
As a reminder, the Newton Culture Fix contains a sampling of Newton’s arts and culture events happening in the area. By no means is it a complete listing of every event taking place in Newton each weekend. If there is an event you would like people to know about, please kindly list it in the comments section or reach out to me and I will be sure to include it.
