It’s rainy, it’s gross, it’s Wednesday – you deserve a night out! I saw Gabe Aguilar, general manager of Cafe Sol Azteca, last night and he mentioned that they’re bringing back their Open Mic Series TONIGHT!
It starts at 7pm with featured performers and then the true open mic style follows. Bring a group, bring a friend, treat yourself. Order a carafe of sangria, pick out a couple combination plates, and be sure to try the flan (Gabe’s mother’s recipe)! If you really feel like celebrating then ask Gabe for one of his margaritas, the man knows his way around tequila.
Fill your belly and your soul full of goodness before you head home to catch the debate! (who knows, the tequila might help!)
Awww, thanks for linking to my column, Kara! Gabe is SUCH a nice guy- and I have to say, as an ex-pat Californian, Cafe Sol Azteca is the ONLY place I will go for Mexican food in the Boston Area!
Mediocre Mexican food that is so over priced it’s ridiculous. Seriously, look at their prices vs other Mexican restaurants. It baffles me that people (including my wife) go there. You are paying for the location, not the food.
I love it too, Wendy! And your article was great!
Kim, where do you prefer in the area? Food aside, I definitely haven’t had a better margarita than Gabe’s.
Kim, real Mexican food- and this is coming from somebody who grew up on the best – is not cheap. Fresh ingredients and homemade chips, tortillas, etc cost more than the mass-produced junk you get at Mexican restaurants (no, I will not name names. I like my job ;-). Even “good” (meaning using more fresh and local ingredients) chains like Chipotle have the advantage of bulk purchasing to offset the cost. So all things considered, Cafe Sol Azteca’s prices are very reasonable. Trust me on this- I do it for a living!
Wendy,
I lived in Los Angeles for 2 years. My uncles wife moved from Mexico when she was 25. I know Mexican food. West Coast does Mexican food and it’s the cheapest food out there because the ingredients are cheap and it’s easy to make.
The only thing that comes close here is Anna’s Taqueria and Boca Grande. Sit down restaurants aren’t necessary for Mexican Food. The food trucks on the west coast blow away anything we have here. Fresher and done to perfection.
Trust me, Sol Azteca is charging people from Newton what they will pay. The people there are nice but it’s a rip off.
