The ongoing wrestling match over the proposed swim-at-your-own-risk policy at Crystal Lake continues with a protest (Occupy the Lake?) by proponents scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) at 5 PM at Cronin’s Cove.
Supporters of the proposal are objecting to the effort to enact new civil penalties for illegal swimming rather than making the swimming legal.
Opponents are focused on safety, health and legal issues.
It appears that ultimately the decision will come down to the Parks & Recreation Dept that sets policy for the lake.
The photo is one of those illegal swimmers enjoying a leisurely backstroke on a warm March day.
This is all about a relatively small group of wealthy, well connected home owners who want Crystal Lake to be their private reserve. Some of those people are actually friends of mine, and I can only hope my opinion doesn’t ruin those friendships. I just call em like I see em…
Crystal Lake is a public resource similar to a park. The people of Newton own it, and they have the right to access it. Some controls are reasonable. Including controls to protect the neighborhood from excessive intrusive behaviors. But when you buy a home next to a public park, you must anticipate the public using it.
Mike, I have to wonder what happens the first time someone is injured – which will happen no matter what part of the lake you swim in. People are fickle and tend to want less regulation until someone gest hurt and then they want the government to babysit everyone (but themselves).
