We got hit with a $1200 water bill a few months ago when we caught up after two years worth of estimated readings . The good news was that our dealings with the Water Dept were quite good. They clearly and patiently explained all the details and they allowed us to spread the payment over a year. The bad news of course is that there never should have been two years worth of estimated readings.
Complicating our individual situation was the fact that we discovered through all this that our water meter was located in a neighbor’s house on another street (that’s an Upper Falls kind of thing).
succinctly stated by John Tener, too bad he is not a member of the Public Facilities committee – were I Mr. Mayor, I would ask him to head up an investigative commission.
We were hit with a surprise $1200 water bill a few months back. It turned out that we had nothing but estimated readings since we bought the house two years ago – so this was the catch-up when they did a real reading.
The good news was that the Water Dept was extremely clear, patient, and helpful in describing exactly what had happened. They also let us schedule the $1200 payment over a year. The bad news is that two years of estimated readings should never have happened.
One of the things that complicated our situation is that we discovered through this process that our water meter is located in the basement of a neighbor’s house on a different street (that’s an Upper Falls kind of thing)
Hi Gerry,
I just noticed that you responded to this story about Newton Water Bills. A small group of us met with Mayor Warren yesterday. I am happy to share the update with you. He encouraged us to let folks know that they should have another conversation with Commissioner David Turocy to review water bill. You may have an opportunity to have your bill further reduced than what the Water Department initially offered you.
