NewTV’s election night coverage Tuesday began with a wide ranging interview with Mayor Ruthanne Fuller where she discussed Webster Woods, NewCAL, Newton Power Choice, Northland, Riverside and other developments (including breaking news about a residential tower at Chestnut Hill Square) and zoning (along with what types of development projects might be proposed in the future).

This same video also includes interviews with Gail Spector and a BU student journalist, School Committee member Steve Siegel, City Council President Marc Laredo and Councilor Cheryl Lappin, following by election results and analysis.

On Tuesday, April 2, Newton Public School Superintendent David Fleishman held a forum on the vaping epidemic among youth. The evening included a panel of speakers providing health, wellness, and prevention education on the topic of vaping. Attorney General Maura Healey provided the keynote for the event. Medical experts and NPS educators also gave information, insight, and education for families and community members.

Another source of local news threatened

In this era of dangerously diminished local news coverage, NewTV‘s streaming of municipal and school meetings, candidate forums and Jenn Adam’s long running weekly Newton News program have been the only constant, consistent, source of local reporting.

But that could all change pending a possible rule change before the FCC that could dramatically reduce the cable fees NewTV and cable access stations nationwide depend on for the majority of their budgets, the Globe reports.

NewTV and Ross Decter launch ‘School Matters’

Former Newton School Committee member Margie Ross Decter has just launched a new series on NewTV called “School Matters,” a program that aims to raise “awareness of educational issues of local and national importance, and the efforts of students and the school community to make an impact by improving our community and the world around us.”
