While our neighbors across the river were hanging up these signs, we’ve decided to encourage outdoor water use with reduced rates for our biggest domestic water users – i.e. second water meters for water used outside of homes.
Curious indeed.

Jerry, we are talking apples and oranges here, or reservoirs and wells, as it were. Newton gets all of our water from the Quabbin Reservoir through the MWRA. This relatively abundant water source rarely imposes use restrictions on the municipalities within their network. On the other hand Needham gets most of their water from three town wells and their supply volume is less consistent. They can and do tap into the MWRA during periods of high need/low well production, which they generally do during seasonal peak use. However, discouraging use reduces Needham’s need to get MWRA water.

@Steve Siegel – Yes, important distinction.
… so is there a difference between apples and oranges? I thought they were all fruit.

Good point — just like how I and the guy running a commuter rail train are both engineers.

Is that why to Rosemary Pond behind Sudbury Farms is almost dry already? Eeek! I thought the town had drained it to clean it up or something.
