The Aldermen’s Real Property Reuse Committee is seeking proposals for long-term lease or sale of the former Newton Centre Library at 1294 Centre Street, contingent upon restoration of the building and its use for some public purpose, or a use that enhances community life in Newton Centre.
Yes, this is the building Mayor Warren had hoped would house a branch of MassChallenge, but met strong objections from members of the Reuse Committee.
The building was erected in 1927 and was constructed with donations from Newton citizens as one of four architecturally similar branches in Newton’s then nascent public library system. The building was most recently occupied by the City’s Health Department. The building is well located with proximate access to the Newton Centre Green Line MBTA Station and municipal parking, and is accessible via I-95, Route 9 and the Mass Pike. Surrounding neighborhood convenience, retail and dining options complement many future uses of this site.
The building will be open for viewing on Friday May 15 from 8-9 a.m. and Monday June 1 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Responses are requested by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 17.
I’ll go out on a limb and say what Newton Centre really needs is a bank branch … or a day spa/nail salon … or a clothing store catering to people over the age of 60.
