The Newton Tab delivers its newspaper to homes for free – but not all homes. I think they claim 80% home delivery. Their delivery policy focuses on the low hanging fruit – the bigger streets and easier to get to homes. Those who don’t get it delivered can usually pick one up at a nearby store.
Since I moved to Newton about five years ago, I’ve live on a tiny little side street, Spring St, in Upper Falls. We’re not on the Tab delivery route so I always picked my copy up at the Upper Falls Variety Store. In the first months here I called the Tab about it and the next week it was delivered – once. In the four years since, maybe once a year a Tab inexplicably lands on my front doorstep for no apparent reason, but never again for another year or so.
This past January, the Upper Falls Variety store closed and my Newton Tab readership stopped altogether except the occasional foray to their on-line edition. I haven’t found any other Upper Falls businesses that have the Tab, and I miss it. I do read bits and pieces on the on-line Tab but its not the same thing and I miss the little stuff.
Last week a Tab arrived at my door. A bit surprised, I thought OK that’s my annual random delivery. Again this morning there was Tab at my door – two back to back weeks??? Could it be? Am I now a Tab regular ? Stay tuned, third week’s the charm.
Jerry…I believe in belt and suspenders. Stop in at Henry’s ( The Depot Coffee Shoppe) and ask him to save one for you. He only gets a few and has requested more. How do you still know everything if you don’t read the Tab? (wink)
There’s really no substitute for the print edition. The online version is unreadable.
I didn’t get one last week after getting it for many years and it doesn’t appear to be out there today either. You can pick one up at Mike’s Barber Shop if the Depot Coffee Shop is too far a walk for you. We’ve been in Newton for 3-3/4 years. We are on a major street (although our address is officially the tiny little side street beside the house). Last fall (November, I think), we received the Tab for the first time ever and for 3 weeks in a row. I thought it was a trend, but then it stopped and has not come again. We do get the Globe daily, not sure if it’s the same delivery person.
I sometimes pick up a Tab at Waban Market. I have not seen one at Mike’s or at Depot Coffee, but maybe I’m never there on the right day of the week.
Meanwhile I’ve never requested the Tab, and all of a sudden 3 months ago it just starts getting delivered. I live on a tiny dead end street and none of us received it before. Two of the 6 houses are vacant, but that doesn’t stop them from piling up the papers in the street. They threw this week’s edition right on top of the accumulating pile in front of both houses.
I’ve call the Tab several times requesting they at a minimum stop my delivery, always being assured they will. They never do.
I take back. My paper was delivered today. It was, however, slightly misplaced.
We got 2!! There was a second copy in the yard near the side door. From 0 – 2 in three weeks, accelerating Tabs.
