After only being open for three days last week and closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week, Newton Public Schools will be back in session Wednesday.
But all students will be heading home early Wednesday because it’s a previously scheduled “professional development day” for teachers.
My kids are happy to be back at school. I worked form home yesterday, so they didn’t get to go to the trampoline park, or the movies, or skiing, because I had to work. These kids are missing their teachers and peers!
Compare this to Framingham- they had a full-day “Development day” last Friday, and were closed Tue-Wed-Thu, along with Mon-Tue this week. Their kids have not been back to school since last Monday the 26th (and back just in time to not be able to attend the Patriots’ parade).
Their last day of school is now June 24. Any idea what Newton’s is (as of today)?
(My calculations, which I don’t trust, say it’s Monday June 22nd)
You are correct. So far that is the last day of school – the local camps start that week. This happened a few years back.
The saving grace is that two of the four snow days in the past two weeks have been Tuesday early release days. And the four days tacked on to the end of the year will be Weds, Thurs, Fri and Mon – all full days. So in a weird way, I feel like we’re coming out ahead after all 🙂
Weren’t snow days included in the school year schedule as distributed? Are they really adding an extra day to the (ridiculously already late!) end of the school year for each snow day needed?
If so, why weren’t snow days built into the schedule? It would seem to be very rare that any aren’t used.
Carry — the published schedule always shows what the last day will be if we have 5 snow days. In a year with no snow days, schools actually ends a week earlier than that. This year, the last day would have been June 16 if we had no snow days. The four snow days we’ve had have thus added June 17, 18, 19 and 22 to the school year.
seems odd to count Tuesday snow days as full days ‘missed’, no?
Thank you for the explanation. I didn’t realize that they would leave earlier with0out using all 5 days.
Tuesdays are full days for high schools.
@doug if any of my 3 kids were in high school, i guess this would make more sense:)
