Tomorrow night, Fri Nov 21, is the first Nomad Story Slam at Gregorian Rugs in Lower Falls This community storytelling event is loosely modeled on the very popular MOTH Radio Hour and the theme of the night will be “on the road“.
Joining us for the event, will be Newton Mayor Setti Warren who will be telling a story of his own.
If you want to tell a story yourself (5 mins, true, and connected to “on the road”) then arrive a little early (7:00 – 7:15).
Otherwise just come to listen to stories in the fabulous Gregorian Rugs, a beautiful Oriental rug showroom in the historic mill building in Lower Falls. We’re counting on a bit of that Arabian Nights magic to rub off those beautiful rugs and onto the tales that will be told.
The event is being presented by the new Newton Nomadic Theater. Tickets are $10 and are available at http://NewtonNomadicTheater.org or at the door
Fabulous evening last night! Just what I expected: funny, affordable, low key, friendly. Except for one, all the tellers related their adventures ‘on the road’.
Thanks, Jerry, to you and your committee (especially the talented techie Chris P.).
Oh what a great time that was last night!
We were hoping to get 40 or 50 guests but ended up with 80+
We didn’t know if we’d end up with enough story tellers to fill two hours, instead we ended up running into double overtime in order to get through the hat full of storytellers aged 16 to 80.
Great stories, great time, great night.
Village14 was represented by Bob Burke telling an amazing story about sneaking an aircraft carrier into a harbor at night. Sally Lipschutz told the most raucous story of the night about being in the middle of an earthquake in San Francisco.
Our elected officials turned out too. Mayor Setti Warren told a heartfelt story about a family friend and neighbor who died almost a year ago to the day. Alderman Scott Lennon brought a tear to my eye when he told the story of “getting the call” to fly to Cincinnati to adopt his daughter. School Committee member Margie Ross Decker told an amazing tale of traveling with her husband to a remote village in Cambodia.
I think the best part of the night was seeing people who had never done anything like this before nervously walking up to the microphone and starting. A minute or two into it, when they heard the audience reacting, you could see them physically relax and then start to hit their stride. By the end of the story, they had the whole audience with them and you could almost see the surprise in their eyes as they finished to the sound of a big crowd of strangers clapping and cheering.
Gregorian Rugs was a fabulous venue for the event and Scott Gregorian is the most enthusiastic host we could hope for.
I can’t wait for the next one … probably sometime in January.
I’m really disappointed I couldn’t make it. It sounds like great fun!
OMG…what fun, fun, fun 🙂 But I might have to move out of Newton after my performance! Raucous? Jerry, you say it was raucous? My reputation is ruined!!!!! Everyone knows I am a perfect lady!
