Just a reminder to join us for an evening of conversation (along with “Oh, yourrr Terry Malloy!!!) with the Village 14 family of bloggers at our Bloggers Night Out party happening at Mick Morgan’s (118 Needham St, Newton) this coming Monday Nov 24, 7-9 p.m.
Come talk politics and Newton and meet the people behind the comments. Lurkers welcome.
I should add: elected officials should skip this only at your own risk because we will be talking about you.
Featured activities:
Aldermanic Fashion Show featuring beach wear.
Mud wrestling pit (with featured match: At-large Ward 3 vs At-Large Ward 5!).
Raffle with grand prize… win a DEMOLITION PERMIT! Second Grand Prize… win a job in the Planning Department!
Adult beverage will be served. Gweg Weibman might open up his expense account, and I’m sure there are lots of pols who will buy your vote with a round of booze!
Hess-Mahan (At-Large Ward 3) vs. Yates (At-Large Ward 5) in a mud pit?????
Providing that ground (mud) rules do not allow the use of guitars or lycra, my money’s on Ward 5! (Bias noted.) Speaking of money, here is an elected politician’s promise: “I will spend my entire government salary and pension as Waban Area Councilor on drinks for the house!!!!!!”
(Before you get too excited, don’t forget that Area Councilors don’t get any government money or benefits…sorry to dash your hopes…but that is a typical kind of political promise, is it not???)
Bummer! This is during Zoning and Planning. Won’t be able to join.
Does it really end at 9?
I thought it was in the Village 14 charter that there can’t be a predetermined end time on events. 9 p.m. is just when Greg and Terry Malloy stop buying drinks for everyone. We’ll still be there!
Perfect timing in fact – don’t the aldercritters take over the drink-buying at 9?
It’ll just get going at 9PM
No worries, we don’t call it quits until the State Police SWAT team throws us out. Tear gas can really sting so don’t wear contact lenses.
And we definitely can’t leave until Ald Sangiolo has had a chance to buy a few rounds, tear gas or not.
They’ve moved us out of our usual corner of the bar and into the main room; we’ve finally made the big time. So when you arrive, look in the main bar area, rather than the usual smaller bar.
I always make a quiet exit before Terry goes completely around the bend and the Newton Swat Team has to crash the event. Yates and Hess Mahan will also be detained at Zoning and Planning, but the rumor they are planning a duel with pistols at 20 paces in front of City Hall at 11 PM is just scurrilous gossip.
I just want to say for those who keep joking about me buying the drinks, you do realize that the Chamber is a not-for-profit, right? The reason I started this blog in the first place is so once or twice a year, you all would buy drinks for me!
@Bob – I asked, and City Hall can neither confirm nor deny the reports of the 11pm duel.
As an aside, this would make for a lovely Jerry Reilly April 1 post some year…
I will be in Finance Committee but if it’s going late I will try to come by. From the address I infer this will require my leaving the boundaries of Ward 2 which I really don’t like to do but the threat of gossip if I don’t show up is pretty compelling
@Emily: We’re a tough crowd in Ward 8. You might want to bring one of your colleagues on the Finance Committee as a bodyguard.
Sorry I won’t be able to make it. Zoning and Planning is meeting for an update on Zoning Reform. My severely limited grey cells will already have given up the ghost by the time we get out of the meeting.
By the way, I don’t put much stock in gossip, but in truth, we will be gossiping about all of you! Or, in the words of Alice Roosevelt, “if you haven’t got anything nice to say about someone, come sit by me.”
I will do my best to drop by.
I do have to get home and prepare stuffing for the Turkey I will be roasting tomorrow for the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association’s Happy Elder Program’s Thanksgiving luncheon tomorrow.
Amy, are you making a turducken?
Trisha, Jane, Greg, Gail, Barbara, Groot, Jen, Nelse, Bob, Robert, Terry, Lauren, Jay, Maureen, Dan, Sallee, and Jerry were there by ten and not shy! (if I forgot someone, my heartfelt mea culpa!)
Others may have dropped in later…I went off to fight the winter moths (see later blogpost) and learn to tweet. (Flash: Jury does not indict officer in Ferguson)
Had a blast. Nice to put faces to names…even the names with whom I am in sometime disagreement.
Pissed I missed this. Pissed I didn’t know it was happening.
Sorry to miss the Bloggers Night Out. Ald. Sangiolo and I and the other members of the Zoning and Planning Committee were busy mud wrestling over Phase 1 of Zoning Reform in Room 202 (soon to be some other room number) of City Hall. But I am happy for the bloggers who were allowed out for one night.
We’re renaming Room 202? What happened, did 15 letter writers object?
Is this allowable under the charter?
Will there be a public hearing first?
Don’t shoot the messenger, Greg. Here is the message we received:
I was told it was to make it easier for public safety officers to evacuate the building in case of an emergency. The shiny new pedestals with the new room directories are in the Rotunda.
Sounds logical…let the conspiracy theories begin!
Next time we need to extend an invitation to blog readers, as well as a special invitation to newcomers who are always warmly welcomed. I noted that Marti mentioned s/he wanted to come but wasn’t sure that she’d feel comfortable going alone.
Greg did say “lurkers welcome” but perhaps new or infrequent visitors did not realize that “lurkers” was what people who read but don’t comment are called. (Hey, there, all you elected officials and city employees. 🙂 )
I noted Marti’s comment also. Marti, I completely understand because I don’t typically go to parties where I don’t know anyone, but a V14 blog party is not like that! And I would have been delighted to meet you, as would others apparently. How often do you get to go to a party like that?
I wasn’t going to go because I thought no one would want to talk to a reporter, but I showed up dressed in my Greg Reibman costume and not only did people talk to me, I got loads of great information. Thanks everyone! 😉
I was sorry I couldn’t attend but now know why people kept saying they saw me there!
Seriously, I regret not being clearer in the invitation. These events are open to all; including journalists and folks who read this blog but never comment. We’ll just have to try again early in 2015.
