The survey only allows you to nominate one business. I had intended to send in recommendations for at least 5 other local businesses I frequent regularly. Is there a way we can acknowledge other businesses? Here’s my list:
Restaurants:
Karoun (N’ville)
Rox Cafe (Highlands)
Brewer’s Coalition (N’ville)
The Absolute Very Best Seafood:
Steamer’s (Nonantum)
Take out:
Blue Ribbon BBQ (West Newton)
Hardware:
Schwartz Hardware (Nonantum)
Women’s Clothing:
The Dressing Room (Auburndale)
Antiques shops:
The Antiques Shop (Nonantum)
Marcy and Bea’s (Highlands)
Framing
The Frame Shop (Waban)
Coffee and Bakery:
Bread and Chocolate
Antoine’s Pastry (best strawberry shortcake for a party!)
Best restaurants where you’re likely to run into friends:
O’Hara’s (Highlands)
The Local (West Newton)
Terry O’Reilly’s (Newton Centre)
Knotty Pine (Auburndale)
The business for whom I filled out the survey:
Pharmacy:
Keyes Drug (A’dale – worth the drive)
Hi Jane – I just dropped a note to the folks manning the survey. We’ll see if we can get that fixed. Thanks!
@Jane – All fixed. Please go in and nominate away!
@Jane: Terrific list of some of our many terrific businesses. But before I begin submitting my own nominations, perhaps Chris could clarify something. Are these awards based on the quality of their product or based on the businesses larger role in the community/village? This is the awards description with the bold added for emphasis….
The values of the awards are meant to be somewhat defined by those who nominate the businesses. Largely, the companies who have won in the past have excellent products/services and have somehow made a demonstrable difference in the community – either through donation, volunteer activity, or by their own activism.
The good news is there’s a great space in the form to state why you’re nominating the business. Make your case!
Chris – What about businesses that draw me to a village and once there, I decide I should stop by several nearby shops? As an example, I go to The Antique Shop in Nonantum all the time (Sharon, the owner, is great fun!), but then I decide to cross the street to pick up some fresh fish for dinner from Steamer’s and have a conversation with Dominic and a dessert from Antoine’s. And as long as I’m there, why not pick up something at Schwartz Hardware to chase off those pesky bunnies in my garden? In each of these places, the people know me (or in the case of Schwartz, know my dear husband).
Just trying to make a case for businesses who are good neighbors and become part of the fabric of a village over time. I’m all for acknowledging activism and contribution, but maybe we also need to acknowledge the hard working people who give a village its character.
@Jane: What time is dinner?
@Jane. Sounds like a great case to make. Go for it!
