Here’s a fun way to pass your time on a rainy Fourth of July.
The US Geological Survey has created a new map tool that enables one to overlay old and new maps, comparing how Newton — and other places — have changed and developed over the years.
It takes a little while of tinkering to explore but its well worth it.
The USGS tool is pretty neat; thanks Greg.
There’s also a tool that lets you compare aerial photos from 1938 onwards.
Greg, thank you for posting. I saw this in an article in the Boston Globe yesterday.
Greg is correct that it takes some tinkering to manipulate the maps. However it is worth the effort to learn if you have an interest in the geographical history of our area.
BTW, it shows the wetlands at Old Cold Springs emptying into / under the Zervas School property. From there the water crosses Beacon Street and works its way through the Newton Cemetery (all those “ponds” are actually the spring running through). The property that now is City Hall was the southern half of Bullough’s Pond. From there it travels in a northeast direction along Walnut Street, Cabot Street and passed the Cabot School. It continues as Laundry Brook in that general direction, and empties into the Charles River near the intersection of Watertown Street and California Street. Very interesting.
