Hope no one hits a foul ball.
They are missing the large backstop that was at the corner of Hull and Lowell before the old new NNHS was built. Home plate was about 6 feet below street level, which also helped to keep the balls on the field.
Actually, the backstop and fence at the corner of Hull Street and Lowell Avenue look pretty impressive to me.
My son’s Babe Ruth teams played some games there last summer, including tournament play. The backstop was great, and the nets worked fine. Some foul ball did get over the nets onto the street and into yards, but no line drives.
Nice field (though I thought the grass was a bit long for some of the games, but what do I know)
Yes, I have seen the warning signs. Hope no one gets beaned.
Ted, it’s all relative. The old backstop started with a 6 – 7′ high concrete base (I recall some wood component too) to bring the backstop up to ground level. Then it went up three levels of chain link fence from there. Trust me, if you were a grade school ballplayer 50 years ago standing in the same location as where your picture was taken, you would be duly impressed. We used the backstop to play a modified game of ball when there were only a couple of us. Once our numbers grew, we would use the field for a real game. I tried to find a picture for you. I think I need to visit the city’s library to review the school yearbooks from that timeframe.
