Nabisco’s unfortunate decision to drop “fig” from the brand name and just call the cookies Newtons left me fondly recalling the days when Mayor David Cohen used to serve the cookies to City Hall visitors. Oh and there was the time in 1991 when Mayor Ted Mann and Nabisco hosted a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Fig Newton featuring a concert outside City Hall with Juice Newton.

I’d say the timing is spot on to bring this merriment back! Just imagine… artists and public build collaborative sculptures out of Newtons, kiddos explore a child-sized village made out of Newtons, residents compete in a Newton eating contest, area chefs compete Iron Chef style with Newtons… endless possibilities!
