Paul Levy discovers a sight that is all too familiar all along the MBTA Riverside Line. I do think he’s being overly-optimistic if he thinks the MBTA is going to do anything about this.
Perhaps some slobs think the ‘D’ in D-Line stands for ‘dump’

I’ve noticed a related and slightly stranger litter issue in my neighborhood. In the Hemlock Gorge park at the Elliot St entrance, I regularly find full dog poop bags.
These dog owners are thoughtful enough to pick up after their dog but then leave the full bag on the ground by the entrance of the park. I’m guessing the problem is that there’s no trash barrel at the entrance and the offenders just don’t want to put it in their car and throw it out at home.
So these seem to be a different breed of litterers. They’re not the more typical completely ignorant litterers … though they’re certainly still annoying.
Then there are the people who thoughtfully pick up their dog’s poop in plastic bags and then throw the bags into storm drains (some of which don’t really drain, apparently, or even if they do, the bags get stuck). One of my tree colleagues once came upon the guys who have to clean those out. They had a pile of plastic dog-poop bags on the back of their truck.
Commuter rail tracks are much worse, unfortunately.
