andreasteenstrup | Newton MA News and Politics BlogLooks like we’ll have a competitive contest for the School Committee seat being vaccated by Jonathan Yeo in Ward 2.  Margaret Albright pulled papers last week. Now comes this from Andrea Steenstrup

Andrea Steenstrup is a candidate for the Ward 2 seat of the Newton School Committee.

Andrea moved to Newton in 2007, with her husband Niels and four children, primarily for the public schools. Andrea is dedicated to maintaining the longstanding strength of the Newton Public Schools for all Newton children.

Her professional experience, her commitment to the Newton Public Schools, along with her involvement in the Seattle, WA and Richmond, England school systems prior to settling in Newton, will bring a fresh perspective to the Newton School Committee.

Professionally, Andrea was a Director of Finance at CIGNA Healthcare of Illinois, responsible for managing large budgets, identifying cost savings in a complex organization, and developing technology strategies. Before that she worked in public accounting and continues to use her tax, financial, and technology background in various leadership roles at the three schools her children attend. Andrea is a CPA and has a BS in Mathematics and an MBA in Finance and Accounting, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

“Andrea’s expertise in financial management and cost saving initiatives, coupled with her 13- year dedication to public schools at every level make her an excellent candidate for School Committee,” said Angela-Pitter Wright, Ward 3 School Committee Member. “She values the gifts of every child and will advocate for all children of every ability.”

A sampling of Andrea’s various roles in Newton include:

  • Cabot PTO Treasurer and Vice President Finance
  • School Council Cabot Elementary, Day Middle School, and Newton North High School
  • Newton North High School Building Liaison Committee participant
  • Day Middle School Fundraising Chair
  • Newton Override Campaign citywide Preschool Liaison

“Andrea is the type of person whose words in support of our schools are followed by strong, effective action,” said community activist and Cabot parent Jen Abbott.  “From serving in PTO leadership roles to being a member of the School Council at multiple schools, Andrea has demonstrated a commitment to our schools and our children that makes her well-suited for a seat on the School Committee.”

“I am a big fan of Newton Public Schools. I would love the opportunity to bring my financial background and hands-on experience in elementary, middle and high school in Newton to help maintain the excellent public schools,” said Andrea. “My experience in other school systems gives me a different perspective on some of the challenges facing the Newton Schools now and in the future. I will work hard to ensure that we spend our money wisely and that we focus on every child reaching his or her potential.”
