Two men were arrested Sunday night while climbing the antenna tower between Chestnut St, Braceland Park and the Upper Falls Greenway. They had parachutes on their backs and a camera on one of their helmets. From the report, its not clear how far up the tower they got before they were nabbed.
My guess is that they were intending to land in nearby Braceland Park, since that’s about the only nearby open landing area.
My favorite detail: one of the tower jumping perpetrators was named Mr. Crumb
Obviously proponents of “parachute at your own risk.”
What I want to know… How did the police get them to come down?
All it said in the Patch report was:
They must have thought the new tennis courts that the city is building was a landing patch.
Speaking of which — is it 1975 all over again? Exactly where other than this park is any municipality spending money on underused tennis courts? Was there a federal tennis grant that I missed?
aw schucks, I guess they got caught this time. Next time the channel 7 tower could possibly land them on the cleared greenway…
I wonder if getting their parachutes tangled in all the guy wires every crossed their minds. I’m guessing that they hadn’t thought that far ahead.
I just heard at the Upper Falls Variety store this morning that they were roughly half way up the tower before they were stopped.
As I said on FB, I think they were gunning for a spot in the Darwin Awards. This happened RIGHT out my back door, and I missed the whole thing… Seriously, though, I’m just glad they didn’t get hurt and that none of our local officers had to risk climbing up there to fetch them.
The neighbor who called it in and subsequently the two police officers saved those guys’ lives. @ Hoss, they were underutilized because they were in need of repair. They will be well used this summer and fall and for years to come.
Marie Jackson _- I hope so. On someone’s desk though are plans for modular classrooms, roof repairs, etc and someone else got priority for tennis… Could it be that the court is across the street for an alderman??
