Recently in his blog (highly recommended for transportation nerds) Ari Ofsevit published a blistering critique of the $11M MBTA proposal to build a one-track ADA-compliant station at Auburndale. He points out that for the same price, all three Newton stations could have a single high platform, but double platform stations are preferable. In a new post, Ofsevit takes a look at what it would take to build such a station, again for roughly the same cost, and how it might benefit the neighborhood, walkability, and even the schools, helping to heal the damage done by the Turnpike in the 1960’s.

I’m surprised this is “news”, everyone expects nothing but incompetence when it comes to the MBTA. If not, we would have decent public transportation in the Metro Boston Area
The Legislature continues to underfund the MBTA and demand “reform before revenue.” It’s been reformed several times now, but when it can’t even cover repairs, it’s tough to be more creative about making the system work better.
Ari grew up in Auburndale and went to Williams School. He knows the neighborhood and has brought imagination and a sharp analysis to the table. His proposal deserves serious consideration.
